Zero Carbon Britain 2030 Report

The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) has just published its new report called Zero Carbon Britain 2030 providing ‘political and economic solutions to the urgent challenges raised by the climate science, outlining how we transform the UK into an efficient, clean, prosperous zero-carbon society’.

Recycle Week 19-27 June

From 19 to 27 June 2010, take part in Recycle Week by bringing your unwanted electrical equipment to your local recycling centre, or to events being held around the county.

On such event will take place at Ely Market Square  on Tuesday 22 June between 9:00 and 4:00.

 For each item you bring you’ll get a token which can be redeemed for the benefit of local schools. Some components of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) are precious, others hazardous to the environment if not disposed of with care.

So don’t bin it, bring it!

Plum Weekend 14/15 August

Mark your calendars!!  The Cambridgeshire Orchard Group is organising a Huntingdonshire Plum Weekend in the plum triangle of Somersham, Bluntisham and Colne. 

Plums and local orchards will be celebrated across these villages on Saturday the 14^th and Sunday the 15^th of August between 11am and 5pm.

• Various orchards will open their gates for “Pick your own”, there will also be the opportunity to take part in guided walks around the orchards led by specialist growers and tree wardens from the district.
• Learn about and taste the different varieties of plum from Early Rivers to Opal, Czar and Victorias.
• Walks and talks will also be led by local Bee-keepers.
• If you have a plum tree and you are not sure what variety it is there will be a “plum identifier” who can help and give advice regarding maintenance.
• Village halls will host photo exhibitions, cooking demos, silk screen printing and the kids will love the open air laboratories which work towards compiling national surveys.
• Local pubs will serve plum based menus.
• Also local growers will have available such delights from Elderflower cordial to cider and cakes!

Bug Hunt and Picnic

 The Trumpington Community Orchard Project  is having a bug hunt and and picnic on Saturday 19 June 2010.

As part of Cambridge City Council Environment Fortnight – the theme this year is biodiversity and National Insect Week

  The Orchard project is planning a Bug Hunt. We will lay beetle traps the night before. On the day you will have the opportunity to look at the bugs and insects found in the traps, orchard trees, and our woodpiles to see what bugs and insects emerge. We will have equipment for you to use to look at the insect closer with magnifying lids.

 Bring a picnic lunch and sit out on the orchard benches or bring a blanket to sit on.
